The night bus from Bogota was quite rough
but we deservedly stopped for breakfast on
our way to Popayan. We enjoyed a delicious
chicken soup, as you do for breakfast...
We finally arrived in Popayan before lunch
time, quickly found a guest house, dropped
our bags and then explored the town, its
busy, lively streets with hundreds of women
shouting "llamadas" (calls) - yes,
it is quite common in Colombia to find people
selling minutes of phone calls on their mobile
phones! Anyway, Popayan was a cute little
town, all white with cute little bridges
but not much else to do so we just relaxed
there for the rest of the day... 04/02/2009

Our next stop, Ipiales, was far more interesting!
We arrived there at night, after a fantastically
scenic drive, grabbed a quick dinner in a
local pizzeria before having an early night
as a fantastic visit was ahead of us the
following morning... We woke up early as we aimed to visit Las
Lajas and get to Ecuador on the same day.
From Ipiales, we took a shared taxi where
we met a local girl, Ruby, who we made friends
with! She even wrote us a little letter,
saying how proud she was we visited her country
and that she dreamt of traveling herself
one day... Anyway the Sanctuario de Las Lajas was one
of the most spectacular and unique we have
seen so far as the photos show... a church
literally built above a spectacular gorge,
against an enormous vertical rock 45m above
the river... We spent the morning there, trying to find
the best angle from which to photograph this
wonder and then headed back to Ipiales to
pick up our bags and go towards the Ecuadorian
border.
