The bus journey from Trujillo to Lima lasted for about 12 hours and we were in one of the best buses we had been in, with fully retractable seats, so we comfortably slept the whole way!
We arrived early in the morning, jumped in a taxi driven by a friendly chap called Luis who took us to a shop so we could buy our train ticket to Huancayo leaving the following day, before dropping us off in a hostel in the Miraflores area of Lima.
We had read the center of Lima was quite a dangerous area (by day and by night) so we just stayed in Miraflores, explored the surrounding beaches and relaxed for the rest of the day, while sipping cold bottles of Inca Cola...

The next morning, at about 6am, our adventure on rails started! It would be a long and fantastic trip of about 12 hours from Lima, passing through the most beautiful landscapes!
Here are a few statistics to give you an idea:
We passed 69 tunnels and 58 bridges. The longest bridge, Puente Carrion was 218 meters long! The longest tunnel measured 1,375 meters (that's quite a lot of time in the dark)! And we stopped at the highest train station in the whole world, Galera, at a whopping 4,781 meters above sea level!!! It took a lot of climbing and switchbacks to get that high!
In order to fully appreciate the views we spent most of the trip in the bar compartment, sipping Pisco Sours...
The landscapes were so fantastic we took more than 400 photos between the two of us!
Everything was going fine when suddenly the train stopped for a very long time in the middle of nowhere... Then one of the staff on the train announced they would be a dance competition at the back of the train, followed by a raffle...
Little did we know these were just tactics to distract us from a main problem: the train was not moving and would move for another 3 hours!
Eventually we were told there was a technical problem and some buses were called to pick us up and drive us to Huancayo...
We got there pretty late, found a cheap hotel, asked about bus times for the following morning and had a night full of dreams of railway, mountains, steam, tunnels and bridges...
