Bogota  Popayan & Ipiales  Otavalo  Quito  Banos  Cuenca  Chiclayo  Trujillo  Huancayo  Huancavelica  Nazca  Cuzco  Machu Picchu

We woke up very early in Huancayo only to find out that the bus we had planned to take was full... So we jumped in a taxi and improvised another destination. We found a shared collectivo taxi that was going to Huancavelica, getting us closer to Machu Picchu, which we were firmly decided to reach within the next few days...
We had to wait quite a while before leaving Huancayo as the collectivo taxis only leave when full... We finally arrived in Huancavelica on time for a tasty breakfast: a meat (we're not 100% sure whether it was goat or something else) soup! It looked like we were getting more and more accustomed to soup for breakfast!
We then booked a bus ticket for the evening and strolled throgh the streets of the town, visiting its colourful and lively market and its thermal water at the top of a big hill.

Our bus was not leaving until later and at that point we felt a bit bored of waiting, and we still had quite a few hours ahead of us... We left our bags at the reception of a hotel on one of the main plazas and sat there for a bit...
We then met a local guy called Carlos who started chatting with us about an old mine nearby and he invited us to join him, his girlfriend and their little girl over there.
We immediately accepted as it was a great coincidence and we had seen everything that could possibly seen in the little town! How lucky was this!
We took a taxi up-hill outside town and arrived at the mine, in the middle of nowhere, among a fantastically scenic group of Andean mountains!
Our brand new ponchos on our backs, we spent a bit of time there, exploring the mine and the nearby village that had been abandoned years ago before going down to the village of Sacsamara and its little church where some offerings were taking place... Laura even offered an apple to El Nino (Jesus...)!
Meeting Carlos and his family had just turned what could have been a boring day into a fantastic non-touristy experience!
We went back to Huancavelica for an early dinner and amazing fresh fruit juices before getting on the bus to Nazca, our next stop...
