It took us about 13 hours to get from Nazca
to Cuzco. We traveled by night and through
spectacular landscapes before finally reaching
the former Inca capital city in the morning.
A taxi took us from the bus terminal to the
center of town where we found a hostel. We stayed 4 days in Cuzco altogether and
explored many archeological sites. Sightseeing
in an organized tour has never been our thing
but because of the lack of time and the multitude
of things to see, we had to do it. We started
with the Sacred Valley of the Incas where
we visited the Inca Citadel of Ollantaytambo,
which included many Inca terraces and canals,
a fortress and the Temple of the Sun. We
also spent some time in the Pisaq market
where we could not resist buying a few warm
clothes. Laura even got a Peruvian flute
and practiced on the bus between temples!
We tasted some delicious empanadas cooked
in an old stone oven and sampled a trout
from a nearby river, specialty of the region. The following day we explored the city of
Cuzco and could admire the centuries old
architecture, which still remains in many
parts of the city as well as extremely interesting
museums and sites right in the middle of
the town. We then followed another guide through the
archeological ruins of Sasaywaman, Q’enqo
and Tambomachay. In Urumbamba we were shown ancient techniques
of clothes tanning, using natural ingredients
such as fruit, spices, leaves and even the
blood of an insect to obtain the color red! Altogether we learnt an awful lot about the
history and the culture of the Inca civilization.
And without going on an organized tour, it
would have been more difficult… 23-27/02/2009
